January

January

As the old year finally closes
the door to a new one opens
creaking softly as we step through

moving forward with a smile
let the old one slip away
and experience whats offered a new

with new opportunities
that can lead to success
the choices are up to you!

Muffled World

On a morning after the snow has fallen, you wake up to a brightness beaming throught the curtains, and you just know the world is all wrapped up in its snow duvet.  Muffled silence.   I just love that feeling.

Muffled World

Waking up to total silence
a sense of bright deafness all around me
a world covered by a thick white duvet
that shines in through my bedroom window
muffling all the every day sounds
creating a stillness everywhere
a white blanket
of cotton wool
all about me this early morning

stood on my back door threshold
surveying the white scenery that greets me
this world still wrapped in its blanket
that covers right to the horizon
suppressing the sounds from my senses
a calmness from all the stresses
a white softness
of fluffy towels
comforting me this early morning.

Relaxation

Relaxation

curled up on sofa with snoozing cat
 dreaming soundly, purring deeply
hiding her nose beneath paws
her tail is wrapped around
 watching her breathing
what does she dream
sleeping cat
relax

Wintry Morning

Wintry Morning

So warm and snug here under my covers
don`t really want to get out of bed
it`s dark and cold outside my window
yet I have a busy day ahead

down in the kitchen the kettle boils
breakfast fills me up before I go
with hat, scarf and gloves, I step outside
a frosty white world, as the winds blow

crunchy pathways and frozen windows
white cobwebs draped across the garden
breathe visible as I walk along
for the winter has arrived again !

A moment in time

A moment in time
is all it takes
to let your pen flow
and a lifetime
of remembrance
to hold the words dear

New Year 2022

A New Year

as this year draws to an end

and a new year is revealed

memories are brought to the surface

of all that has taken place

some have been hard to bear

while others have warmed the heart

all are part of our life story

what will your story be about?

Wintry Sun

Wintry Sun

Stillness and silence holds this place
powdered snow muffling any sound
many trees silhouetted by the sun
everything appears sparkling around

dark branches fringed by shining twigs
creating a hazy atmosphere
sunlight flashes brightly through
before these images disappear

clear bright blue skies above this trees
blanketed in snow everywhere
wintry sunlight warms the heart
illuminating these trees with care

this scene is a moment in time
a winter postcard looking grand
bright sunshine sparkling on the snow
creating a magic wonderland

Spy amongst the Flowers

Spy amongst the Flowers

 Spied a little figure watching
in plain sight just for me
hidden amongst the flowers
while sipping my earl grey tea

pointed hat perched on his head
long white beard around his chin
such a cheeky impish chappie
hiding a big mischievous grin

this sweet little secret watcher
spying on people for hours
makes me chuckle with joy
while he peeps out of the flowers

Approaching Christmas

I have always written a poem at Christmas for my husband, Steve,
who died over 14 years ago.  These poems are personal, sentimental, emotional and full of our love 💕

Approaching Christmas

As Christmas time approaches
bringing memories to the fore
as a tear runs down my cheek

an empty chair at the table
seeing your photo on the wall
just my pen helps me speak

this festive time`s for families
making memories to treasure
and yet we are missing you

time is not so much a healer
for I miss you more and more
so lucky, my kids help me through

as we prepare for Christmas
 bright decorations go up
presents under the twinkling tree

there`s a great buzz in the air
sitting near to me I sense you
watching us and smiling at me.

Will always love and miss you Steven

Jelly Baby

Shaped poems are great fun and many different shapes can be used. I remember JellyBabies when I was a child and loved them.  Sweet and colourful creations.

Jelly Baby

I`m a little
chewy jelly baby
along with all my
colourful friends
we come from a
yellow packet
just for you
we`re sugary sweet
a little treat to taste in a secret
hide away. What`s your favourite
Is it red or green, which one do you
eat         first, or yellow one       last
Do you nibble at my
feet slowly or devour
my head in one?  Taste
all my  fruity  flavours
then when      all`s gone
remember        enjoyment
will only be         a shop away

Angry Storm

 Angry Storm

It`s one of those days today
the weather`s in a bad mood
such a big temper tantrum
so much damage has been viewed

winds lashing at everything
throwing items all around
whistling through the rafters
crashing trees down to the ground

high seas thrashing at the coast
white tipped waves raging onward
smashing up against the land
yet we won`t be conquered

roads and bridges have been closed
sand bags all are at the ready
this storm s getting pretty angry
we must to keep going steady

with fiercely raging tempest
battering us along the way
all frozen, soaked and tired too
a tempestuous  kind of day

have to let this tantrum clear
for this turmoil will soon cease
then we`ll pick up the pieces
for once its over there will be peace

True Christmas

True Christmas

On Christmas eve it was so cold
like it was all those years before
as a couple tried to find a room
but they're only offered a stable floor

amongst the hay and ox and ass
the saviour of the world was born
laid in a manger warm and safe
watched over by Mary, `til the morn

there were shepherds in the field
all guarding their flock by night
when a heavenly host appeared
telling them of the child, with delight

leaving to visit the baby
travelling to the little stable
bearing gifts for baby Jesus
showing him love, as they were able

Mary takes this all to her heart
God has told her, he was precious
so as we gather altogether
let`s remember that first Christmas

Magic in the Air

Magic in the Air

There`s magic in the air tonight
The moon will make it sparkle bright
Santa`s reindeer  soar and roam
Thus guiding them to your home

Where they land safe and sound
on the snow covered ground
and with his sack full of toys
enters your home without a noise

underneath your Christmas tree
he places gifts for the whole family
then in a flash he flies away
wishing all a great Christmas Day!

My Life Song

As Christmas is approaching, I remember my life song and know
that it is still being written in the background,   the next verse is due!

My Life Song
Is it over then?  without a word you slip away
what was once so very strong, is over in a day
hurting and wondering what went wrong
its finished, the final verse of our song

I remember the very first verse we wrote
all the good intensions we wanted to promote
memories for us to put away and treasure
something that would give us so much pleasure

our life song developed as we walked together
what life throw at us, we just managed to weather
good times or bad, it didn`t really worry us
we were with each other. we didn't`t make a fuss
our whole world would last us into old age
sitting secure in our lovely ivory cage
until that fateful day, when all was thrown into doubt
the life we had cherished was turned inside out

it`s a day that is burnt into my sad heart
for the Angels came and tore us apart
left me standing in the midst of devastation
all of my world gone, nothing but desolation

time is a great healer, I have been told
memories will help me cope as I grow old
however I have found time for reflection
so I`m able to finish our song with affection.

Tick Tock

 Tick, Tock

quiet moment to contemplate
sat back and close one`s eyes
be still, breath in this silence
for timeout is always wise

a clock ticks away the hours
 relaxing rhythmic beat
calming of a sleeping cat
purring loudly upon a seat

distant melodies heard softly
as if from another world
strange and yet so soothing
 chords and tunes all swirled

time marches ever forward
as the clock continues to tick
a quiet moment is heavenly
best medicine and not a trick!

Nighthawk

"Reoccurring Nightmares"  poem based of an entry from The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows

Nighthawk

laying my head on my soft pillow
snuggled up cosy in my big bed
drifting off to the land of dreams
when the nighthawk enters my head

pecking at the back of my mind
my sleep is suddenly abandoned.
what about that uncompleted task?
he can be really underhanded

oh my, that second slice of cake
creating a huge nagging guilt
nighthawk just won`t let is pass,
without some sleep I`m going to wilt

in the morning he circles over head
while biding his time during my day
then finally I get ready to sleep
that`s when nighthawk comes out to play

Little Miss Red

I was reading some Nursery Rhymes to a friend`s daughter and she loved Little Miss Riding Hood.  She asked me to write a version for her.  This is the result and I`m pleased to say little Katie loved it !

Little Miss Red

Little Miss Red
got up out of bed
to go and visit her gran

picked up her coat
and a five pound note
runs out of her caravan

through the dark wood
dressed in her red hood
her basket on her arm

feels someone is there
sees a wolf, what a scare !
but she`d never come to harm

for in her pocket
found next to her Locket
she carries a small pistol

if he comes too near
he can join big brown bear
sweeping the streets of Bristol !

so off she skips
a smile on her lips
can`t wait to see her Grandmother

she`ll have such fun
playing out in the sun
best place to be through the summer  !

Fairy Godmother

 Fairy Godmother

check wings are working well
do an online food shop
buy new curlers and hair spray
have my tiara straightened
sprinkle the house and make it clean
collect dress from the dry-cleaners
assist Cinderella with her evening gown
post out the extra invites
find those pesky glass slippers
there`s so much to do this year
just time to wish you, Merry Christmas!

Sunday

Lazy Sunday morning
relaxing with a frothy coffee
curled up snug on my sofa
what dance will my pen play out
as I enjoy a wonderful start to my day
here`s hoping you have a great one too!

Be True to Yourself

Be True to Yourself

Indulge in the richness
soak up the love of life
discover new treasures
where ever they may be
delve deep and see
then you will find.....
don`t bury your head
in the cold wet sand
open your eyes and see
what the world has to offer
never say never
always be true to yourself
honesty and kindness
makes a true person
smile, and the world smiles too
if you hurt, don`t forget
there`s always someone
worse off than yourself
with humility to all
you will never walk alone..!
